Metroid Dread Report Vol. 7: Secrets of the Chozo
10 September 2021
Welcome to the Metroid Dread Report! This series will introduce the newest information on Metroid Dread for Nintendo Switch and the world of the Metroid series, along with behind-the-scenes glimpses from the game’s development team.
In this edition, we’ll brush up on Chozo history and take a closer look at some of the mysterious warriors that Samus Aran encounters during her latest mission.
Who are the Chozo?
The Chozo were a highly intelligent and technologically advanced bird-like species who believed their purpose was to spread peace throughout the galaxy. However, this once-mighty civilization eventually reached a breaking point and collapsed. Now, the Chozo who remain prefer to stay hidden among the stars.
After Samus lost her parents at a young age during an attack by the Space Pirates, the Chozo took her under their wing and raised her on planet Zebes. If not for the Chozo, Samus would not be who she is today.
~Transmission from the dev team~
"As mentioned in a previous Metroid Dread report, Samus received a transplant of Chozo DNA to allow her to survive the harsh conditions of planet Zebes. Her Power Suit and Arm Cannon are also made with advanced Chozo technology."
"The Chozo are inextricably bound to Samus and the Metroid series. But what role will they play in this story? Stay tuned!"
The Chozo standing in Samus' way
You can see multiple living Chozo in the trailer released alongside the last Metroid Dread report. Despite Samus' history with the species, they appear to treat her as an enemy. In one scene set shortly after her arrival on planet ZDR, a Chozo stands before Samus.
A mysterious opponent
Attacking without warning, it appears that their right arm is equipped with an Arm Cannon, much like the one Samus bears. This figure is much larger than Samus and even other Chozo warriors, and they easily overpower Samus in combat.
Chozo Soldiers
Chozo Soldiers are equipped with a weapon that looks like a long spear. The trailer shows they are highly capable fighters, with one scene showing them locked in fierce combat with Samus.
Robot Chozo Soldiers
Samus must also face combat robots created using advanced Chozo technology. They are powerful forces to be reckoned with, capable of high-speed movement and armed with an electromagnetic blade as well as an Arm Cannon that fires projectiles.
~Transmission from the dev team~
"The presence of the Chozo is one of Metroid Dread's many 'terrors'. Samus was raised by the Chozo, but the Chozo who appear in this game are extremely hostile towards her. Plus, she gets completely overwhelmed in her battle against a mysterious Chozo figure..."
"What plans do these Chozo have? Are they enemies or allies to Samus? And if they are enemies, how in the world will Samus defeat them? You’ll have to play the game to find out!"
Remnants of the Chozo
During her previous missions to planet Zebes and planet SR388, Samus has encountered numerous Chozo artifacts and other remnants of their history.
Among them are Chozo Memories (found throughout Metroid: Samus Returns for Nintendo 3DS) that reveal parts of Chozo history leading up to the events of Metroid Dread.
~Transmission from the dev team~
"The Chozo Memories show the Chozo landing on planet SR388 for research purposes, their first encounter with the X parasite, and the development of the Metroid species intended to exterminate the X parasite."
"These memories also show a figure that bears a striking resemblance to the mysterious warrior who attacks Samus on planet ZDR…"
"With the help of these memories, it may be fun to speculate about exactly what happened on planet SR388 and how the events there tie into the story of Metroid Dread."
