Title: Professor
A member of a band of mercenaries led by his father, Jeralt. After he rescues a group of students from Garreg Mach Monastery who are being hounded by bandits, he is invited to teach at the Officers Academy as a professor. At the academy, he is tasked with educating and guiding the students of his chosen house.
Though his skill as a mercenary is widely recognized, he often proves ignorant of the state of affairs in Fódlan and shows little understanding of emotions. Increasingly, he sees visions of a mysterious girl named Sothis. Though her presence unnerves him at first, Sothis's support saves his life on more than one occasion.
He soon learns that he possesses a Crest that is bestowed only upon the goddess's chosen and passed down through her bloodline. This allows him to use the Sword of the Creator, a Hero's Relic that can only be wielded with the help of a Crest.
Near the end of Byleth's first year at Garreg Mach, the Adrestian Empire declares war on the Church of Seiros. The Empire's forces invade the monastery, and during the fighting he vanishes in a landslide. He enters a deep slumber, and is awoken by Sothis five years later.
Returning to the monastery grounds to fulfill a promise, he reunites with his students and joins the war that will decide the fate of Fódlan. Through fighting in that conflict, he discovers the secret that has long dwelt inside him.
