Got questions about Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition? Well, let’s rap, champ!
Live from your home, it’s the Nintendo World Championships: NES™ Edition game!
On July 18, you can start testing your speedrunning skills in over 150 bite-sized challenges across NES™ system games*.
If you’re not familiar with speedrunning, you may be wondering what the dealio is with this game. Well, we got the 411** on all the deetz. So, let’s get to it!
Speedrunning? Bite-sized challenges? Are you making up words?
Well, yes and no. For those not in the loop, “speedrunning” just means playing through a game while trying to complete a challenge as fast as possible. Meanwhile, “bite-sized” means completing a very short/simple task. Put the two words together, and it means you’ll be trying to complete a quick challenge as fast as possible.
In Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, you’ll be able to take on challenges in 13 classic NES games, including Super Mario Bros.™ 3, The Legend of Zelda™, and Metroid™. Objectives for these challenges range from simple (collecting coins) to a bit more difficult (clearing a course). The real test comes down to how fast you can complete each one.
Once you start to feel confident in your skills (or just feel like trying something different), check out the more difficult LEGEND challenges. These can be pretty tough, so if you find yourself having a hard time, Classified Information can be a helpful spot to get tips and tricks on how to improve.
How will I know what to do?
Once you’ve selected your challenge, you’ll be taken to a screen that reminds you what the objective is, shows your Personal Best, and gives a bit of info on what game the challenge is from.
Before you begin, there will be a quick demonstration video that will show you how to complete the objective. The clip will play in a continuous loop, so you can watch it as many times as you need to get ready. Once you’re feeling confident you know what to do, just press Start.
Now it’s time to be speed! Try to complete the challenge as fast as possible. If you’re not happy with the time you got, you can try again as much as you’d like! You can even watch your Personal-best replay to see where you may be able to shave off some time.
Will I be able to challenge my friends?
Competing against yourself to see how quick you can complete a challenge can be super fun—but sometimes you just want to dominate against your friends (respectfully). You can gather a crew of up to eight players*** in local Party Mode to see who among you is the fastest. You’ll be able to take on individual challenges or compete against each other in themed challenge packs.
Is someone in your group a completely new player? That’s okay, they can still join in on the fun! With the automatic rewind feature, newer players will be able to undo mistakes and try again.
Can I play with people online?
In World Championships Mode, you’ll be able to aim for a spot on the online**** leaderboards in five weekly rotating challenges. At the end of each week, you can compare your times against other players around the world. You’ll even be able to watch replays of the world’s best times to improve your own skills!
Meanwhile, in Survival Mode, you’ll be able to race against the ghost data of seven other players. Rush to be the first in three rounds of challenges. But watch out, after each round, half of the players will be eliminated. Who will be the last player standing?
So, what do you say, champ? Feeling up for a challenge?
