Notice about service for Nintendo 3DS software Nintendo Letter Box

Thank you for your support.

Nintendo has learned that some consumers, including minors, have been exchanging their friend codes on internet bulletin boards and then using Nintendo Letter Box to exchange offensive material. Nintendo has been investigating ways of preventing this and determined it is best to stop this service because it allows direct exchange of photos and was actively misused.

Nintendo always wants to provide a positive experience for all consumers and limit the risk of any inappropriate activity or misuse of a service. We feel it is important on this occasion to take this action.

We will be stopping the service listed below. We are very sorry for the inconvenience to the many consumers who have been using this service responsibly, however this decision was made considering the point that many minors also use this service. Thank you for your understanding.

Nintendo will continue to work to ensure more consumers are aware of our Parental Control features which allow parents to manage their children’s experience on our systems. For more information about Parental Controls on Nintendo 3DS, please visit our Support section.

Nintendo Letter Box lets you send 2D or 3D handwritten messages to your friends via StreetPass. With stationery to unlock and options to add sound recordings and photographs, your messages are sure to be full of character – whether you’re swapping reminder notes, little letters, cute cartoons or pictures. Have fun and go wild with your scribbles to make someone smile today!

In a nutshell…

You write out a personal message, select who to send it to via StreetPass, then (Poof!) off goes your message on wireless wings to your friend’s Nintendo 3DS system. You can send messages to just one person, or a whole group of friends!

Make it 3D

Jot down your message in simple 2D writing, or use a special pen to make your scribbles seem to pop out of the screen - why not go crazy and use both on one letter? Play around with the effects and you’re sure to create some really dynamic notes that are set to impress.

Feature a photo

You can add a photo that you’ve taken with Nintendo 3DS Camera onto your little letters too - if you took the photo in 3D, then it’ll display in 3D when your friend receives it.

Attach a sound

For a really personal touch you can add a short sound recording made with Nintendo 3DS Sound. Send up to five seconds of audio to turn your mail into a talking note, or even a musical message!

Set a date

Some sentiments are for a special day and shouldn’t be opened before then. For those occasions when timing is everything, you can set a Date Stamp on your message, so your recipient can’t sneak a peek before the day. It’s an easy way to send little birthday messages, happy anniversary wishes, and much more!

Unlockable goodies

Write for rewards! The more letters you send, the more special stuff you can get your hands on, and don’t worry, help is at hand: when you first start the software you’ll meet Nikki, a friendly little Mii who will explain everything you need to know to get started, and she’ll pop up again every time you unlock something new to tell you all about it!

Stationery rules!

You can spend Play Coins (which you earn while walking around with your Nintendo 3DS system) on loads of different types of stationery - so whether you’re after something with hearts and flowers for a certain someone, or want to send some old-school airmail, there’s something for the occasion!

You can only appreciate the 3D effect of Nintendo 3DS on the system itself. All screenshots and game footage on this site are captured in 2D mode.
