Square Enix masterfully uses the Nintendo DS Touch Screen to take real-time strategy gameplay to the next level in the continuing story of the Final Fantasy XII saga in Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings.
Set one year after the conclusion of the events of Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings introduces you to new scenarios, new characters and new locations in the majestic world of Ivalice and details what happens next to Final Fantasy XII heroes Vaan, Penelo, Fran and Balthier.
Although the story may ring familiar with Final Fantasy XII fans, players will discover a unique combat system only possible on the Nintendo DS. The Touch Screen control in battle is direct and easy-to-use, letting you command a large number of troops and cast a variety of spells with simple taps and strokes. In a battle, you’ll simply touch a unit to select it and then touch the location where you want it to move or the enemy you want it to fight.
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings features the Final Fantasy XII Gambit system, a means of pre-selecting an attack that a character will use first in combat. You can select a single spell or other ability for a character before battle, and as the battle wages on, you can change the Gambit attack on-the-fly. This way you can instantly adjust your tactics based on the shifting circumstances on the battlefield.
Each lead character takes into battle certain ‘espers’, summoned monsters with which the character has forged a pact. Each esper has its own abilities, strengths and mode of attack, be it in the air, ranged or direct melee combat. Espers make up a large section of your battle force, and forging pacts with many different kinds of espers gives your army a well-rounded edge against enemies. During a battle, you can move or attack with multiple espers by drawing a square around them on the Touch Screen. This selects many units that now react as one to your next command.
You’ll dive into more than 45 missions contained within 10 chapters that will take you deeper into the Final Fantasy XII story. Plus, you can take on side quests for even more exploration. Like a traditional RPG, you’ll be able to level up your characters and their abilities in addition to improving their weapons.
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings not only gives the Touch Screen a good workout, the game features some incredible pre-rendered movies that really show off what the DS can do.
