3D Secure – Information regarding the online payment authentication
In this article you'll learn about 3D Secure, the additional authentication screen added to the Nintendo eShop checkout process of a transaction.
What is 3D Secure?
Due to the new European payment regulations effective from 01 January 2021, with which Nintendo eShop is compliant, an additional authentication screen has been added to the Nintendo eShop checkout process of a transaction – 3D Secure.
Note: this only affects countries belonging to the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the Member States of the European Union (EU) and three other countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway (excluding Switzerland).
The way of confirming the payment depends on your bank. Here are some examples of what you may face in order to complete the purchase:
- You might receive a one-time password via SMS sent from your bank to your mobile phone.
- You might need to log into an app of your bank to retrieve the code to confirm the transaction.
- You might need to log into your online banking.
After you have carried out the authentication and confirmed the payment, the transaction can be completed.
Note: When adding funds, please make sure you are signed in to the Nintendo Account that you are intending to add the funds for. In particular, if you have one or more supervised accounts (such as a child account), please make sure you are using the correct account.
