After the War of Shadows, the young prince Marth returns to his homeland of Altea and devotes himself to its restoration. He announces his intention to wed Princess Caeda, of the kingdom of Talys, and aims to live out his days in peace. That peace is short-lived, however—soon the first emperor of the Holy Empire of Archanea, Hardin, asks Marth to assist him in quelling an uprising in the remote region of Grust. There, Marth is forced to confront the fact that the Archanean regime has become cruel and oppressive.
Unable to stand for Archanea's tyranny, and overcome with doubts about his erstwhile ally, Marth resolves to confront Hardin. Nyna, now Hardin's wife, entrusts Marth for the second time with the Fire Emblem—a crest that is bestowed only upon a true champion. Marth becomes the leader of a rebellion against the empire, rallying all those who are dissatisfied with Hardin's rule.

Also known as the Hero-King, among other titles.

After defeating Hardin, Marth presses on to confront those who had been pulling his strings: the Shadow Dragon, Medeus, and his Dark Pontifex, Gharnef.
Vanquishing these foes secures the future of Archanea and establishes Marth not only as the fifth king of Altea, but also the leader of an Archanean Alliance which unites all seven kingdoms of the continent under one banner. He finally marries Princess Caeda of Talys, and the two devote themselves to healing the damage caused by the repeated conflicts across the land.
For his role in ending both the War of Shadows and the War of Heroes that followed it, Marth is forever after revered as the legendary Hero-King.
