We hope this article will be helpful to those who are just beginning with the series, as well as those who have played before but found themselves getting stuck.

You can learn how to use the Poltergust G-00, an all-important item for exploring the hotel from this article as well, so feel free to use those tips together with the information in this guide.

*This article was written with use of the Joy-Con Grip (holding both controllers) or the Pro Controller for Nintendo Switch in mind.

Welcome to the Last Resort hotel

Luigi has come to the Last Resort hotel with Mario, Peach, Toad, and his trusty Polterpup. After checking in and getting to his room, he couldn't resist having a snooze.

Waking up in a massive ghost hotel

Waking up to the sound of Peach screaming, Luigi finds that everything has completely transformed and is now shrouded in darkness.
As he looks for his friends, Luigi finds the hotel owner, Hellen Gravely, and King Boo, whom Luigi was supposed to have once captured. Mario and the others have been kidnapped by Hellen Gravely and King Boo and trapped inside of picture frames!

Luigi almost gets captured by King Boo too, but he avoids danger by leaping into the laundry chute, ending up in the Laundry Room on the first level of the basement. He follows Polterpup down the hall to the Garage.

Sometimes, mice and bats appear inside the dim hotel.
You'll take damage if you touch them, so try your best to steer clear. If you take damage, you can heal by collecting Hearts.

When Luigi goes further into the Garage and opens the trunk of a car, he will obtain the vacuum, Poltergust G-00. Now, his exploration of the ghost hotel can begin in earnest.

A Ghostly Reception: The Grand Lobby on the first floor

The next place Luigi should head to is the entrance of the hotel, the Grand Lobby on the first floor.
Time to leave the Garage on the first level of the basement and head down the hall.

Even though there is an elevator, for some reason, he can only press the button for the floor he's currently on. Just then, he shines the Strobulb on a strange device, and the door to the stairs opens.

Your welcome package includes a spectral surprise

After going up the stairs to the first floor, you'll encounter blue ghosts called Goobs. Use the Poltergust G-00 to capture them.

First, press the A Button to shine the Strobulb directly at the ghosts' faces to surprise them and stop them in their tracks.
Next, press the ZR Button to suck them up, pulling them in the opposite direction that they're trying to run, which reduces their HP. When the ghosts' HP reaches zero, you can suck them up and capture them.

Also, pressing the A Button while you're vacuuming them will let you use Slam to smack them into the ground and deal a large amount of damage, so be sure to give this a shot, too!

A strange painting awaits: The Mezzanine on the second floor

After going up the stairs in the first floor lobby, you'll reach the Mezzanine.
The door directly in front of you is locked. If you don't yet have the key, try looking around the front desk on the first floor. You can open the counter door using a Burst by pressing the ZL and ZR Buttons at the same time.

Once you successfully open the door and enter the spacious room on the second floor, you'll find that Professor E. Gadd, an expert in ghost research, has been sealed inside a painting. Let's hurry up and find a way to save him.

The key is the reflection in the large mirrors

As you follow Polterpup down the halls of the second floor, he will disappear behind a locked door. Let's take a look inside the Dressing Room next door to see if there are any clues.

There are many large mirrors inside the Dressing Room, and you'll find a start button for a device when you look into them. Shine the Strobulb in the direction of the button, and you'll get the key! Once you've got the key, make your way to the room Polterpup went inside.

Get the curse-breaking Dark Light

Use the key you got in the Dressing Room to open the door to the Storage Room, where you'll find Polterpup.
While exploring the Storage Room, you'll get a new part for the Poltergust G-00—the Dark Light.

The Dark Light can be used by holding down the X Button to shine a mysterious light that removes curses from objects. For example, it can materialize things trapped inside picture frames or doors that have vanished.

If you shine the Dark Light on the painting of Professor E. Gadd in that spacious room, you will be able to rescue him.

The concierge will assist with your luggage: The Garage on the first level of the basement

Luigi and the now rescued Professor E. Gadd will make their way to the Garage on the first level of the basement. The first boss of the game, Steward, dressed like a hotel concierge, is now suddenly working in the Garage; he definitely wasn’t there a while ago.

After noticing Luigi and the Professor, Steward will start to throw luggage. You'll take a lot of damage if you get hit by the luggage, so be careful as you make your way over to him.

If you try to shine the Strobulb on him, he'll block it using the luggage. In order to hit him with the Strobulb's light, you'll need to aim it at him when he isn't holding any luggage. You can blow away any luggage he's holding with a Burst.

Once you're able to hit him with the Strobulb's light successfully, you can vacuum him to bring down his HP and eventually suck him up like the other ghosts.

After taking care of Steward, you'll get the missing buttons for the elevator—but only two for now. Looks like you're going to have to deal with some other ghosts, too.

Housekeeper on duty: The RIP Suites on the fifth floor

Your next destination will be the RIP Suites on the fifth floor. Let's go get the briefcase Professor E. Gadd left in his room.

The fifth floor hallway is blocked, but you can use the Poltergust G-00's new Suction Shot feature to get through.

Press the Y Button to launch the plunger and stick it to a flat, smooth surface.
Next, press the ZR Button to vacuum the rope attached to the plunger. Press the A Button, and you'll be able to suck up the rope and slam objects down hard, breaking them.

There are many guest rooms on the fifth floor. If you press the + Button to use the Virtual Boo that you use to communicate with Professor E. Gadd, you'll be able to check the Map and your current objective. Let's use the Map to find the room where Professor E. Gadd was staying.

Aim for the swallowed briefcase

When you arrive at Professor E. Gadd's room, you'll find the next boss, a ghost dressed as a housekeeper named Chambrea, cleaning.

Chambrea will swallow Professor E. Gadd's briefcase and escape by going through the walls.
If you're not sure where she's run off to, you can use the Dark Light to look for the trail she left behind.

You won't be able to suck up Chambrea the same way you've been able to suck up the other ghosts.
Try to deal damage to her by firing the Suction Shot at the briefcase she swallowed, pulling on the rope and slamming it down.

Chambrea will run away several times, but as you chase after her and deal damage, you'll eventually be able to suck her up. After you've taken care of Chambrea, you'll get the briefcase along with a new button for the elevator.

A new friend, Gooigi, makes his appearance

Once you deliver the briefcase to Professor E. Gadd on the first level of the basement, you'll learn what's inside—Luigi's gooey doppelganger, Gooigi.
You can summon Gooigi by clicking down on the Right Stick, and each subsequent time you click down on the Right Stick, you'll be able to switch between Luigi and Gooigi.

Gooigi, true to his name, is so soft that he can pass through narrow gaps, such as iron bars or air vents.

However, he's vulnerable to water and doesn't have very much HP. If he ends up disappearing, you can bring him back by clicking down on the Right Stick again.

Gooigi can use the exact same moves as Luigi, including vacuuming and blowing away as well as the Suction Shot.
Switch between Luigi and Gooigi to escape from the iron bars.
With his trusty new pal, Gooigi, Luigi heads for the Hotel Shops on the third floor.
What kind of boss battle awaits him next? And where in the world are Luigi's captured friends?
You'll have to see what happens next for yourself!

Who's scared of the big bad ghosts: How to deal with different ghosts

You will see a number of different types of ghosts, and each one will have its own unique characteristics and attack patterns.
We'll give you some tips to manage common ghosts so you can fearlessly take on any you come across!

Strike when Goobs sneak up on you

The most commonly encountered ghost, blue Goobs, have small bodies and move quickly. Some Goobs will drop lots of money or even strange gems when you defeat them.

They often come up from behind Luigi, so use that moment to strike with your Strobulb.

Stay cool and sneak up behind Hammers

Red ghosts called Hammers are larger, blocky ghosts, so you won't be able to vacuum them up head-on. Because of the shape of its body, you'll be able to suck it up from behind, so try to aim for its back and use Slam to damage it.

It will also charge at you but will fall down if you dodge, so watch its movements closely and aim for a counterattack!

Strike Oozers when they're on the move

Yellow ghosts called Oozers throw things from their hiding places.
They will sneak around and hide, so strike when they're on the move or use Suction Shots and Slam to destroy their hiding place and deal damage.

Break free using Burst when a Slinker catches you

The final ghosts we will discuss are purple ghosts called Slinkers, which usually hide themselves.
While hidden, they’ll approach from behind, then suddenly grab Luigi, but don't panic—break free using Burst!
If you lose sight of one, you can use the Dark Light to find it again.

There are plenty of other unique ghosts for you to meet, but we're confident you can handle them if you carefully observe their traits and use the techniques we've shown you.
You'll need to gain experience with ghosts to prepare for the battle with King Boo, whom you'll no doubt meet before long!
