    How to Start a Multiplayer Game in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

    In this article, you'll learn how to start a multiplayer game in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury.

    Note

    • A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play online with friends in Super Mario 3D World.
    • It is only possible to play online with players on your friend list.
    • In local wireless and online play, each Nintendo Switch console or Nintendo Switch Lite system must own a copy of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury.
    • During local wireless and online play, up to two players can play on each console.

    In Super Mario 3D World, up to four players can work together to save the Sprixie Kingdom. In Bowser's Fury, up to two players can play as Mario and Bowser Jr. as they venture through an interconnected, cat-themed world.

    Which part of the game are you playing?

    In Bowser's Fury, a second player on the same console can control Bowser Jr. to assist Mario. Local wireless and online play are not available in Bowser's Fury.

    1. Open the game and start Bowser's Fury.
    2. Advance through the game until you can talk to Bowser Jr.
    3. After talking with Bowser Jr. for the first time, press the + Button to open the menu.
    4. Select Two-Player Mode.
    5. Press the L + R Buttons or SL + SR Buttons on an additional controller to add a second player who will control Bowser Jr.

    Open the game and select Super Mario 3D World.

    How do you want to play with other players?

    1. While on the map, press the L + R Buttons or SL + SR Buttons on up to three additional controllers for each new player.
    2. Each player will be able to select the character they wish to control.
    1. Go to the map on each console.
    2. If you wish to have two players use a single console, press the L + R Buttons or SL + SR Buttons to add a new local player.
    3. Press the R Button or SR Button to open the Local/Online menu on each console.
    4. Select Local Wireless Play.
    5. On one console, select Create Room. This console's user will be the host player.
      • The host player's current save file will be used. Progress will only be saved to the host player's file.
    6. On all other consoles, select Join Game, then select the host player's name when it is found.
      • If the host player cannot be found, make sure that wireless features are enabled on each console and that the consoles are near each other.
    7. After all consoles have connected, you're ready to play together. Each player will be able to select the character they wish to control.
    1. Go to the map on each console.
    2. If you wish to have two players use a single console, press the L + R Buttons or SL + SR Buttons to add a new local player.
    3. Press the R Button or SR Button to open the Local/Online menu on each console.
    4. Select Online Play.
    5. On one console, select Create Room. This console's user will be the host player.
      • The host player's current save file will be used. Progress will only be saved to the host player's file.
    6. Select whether or not to set a password on the host player's console. If a password is set, all other players will need to enter it before they can join.
      • If you choose to set a password, you will be prompted to enter a 3-digit password before you can continue.
    7. On all other consoles, select Join Game, then select the host player's name when it is found.
      • If the host player set a password, you will need to enter the 3-digit password before you can continue.
      • If the host player cannot be found, make sure that each console is connected to the internet, that each player has a Nintendo Switch Online membership and that the joining players have added the host player to their friend list.
    8. After all consoles have connected, you're ready to play together. Each player will be able to select the character they wish to control.
