In their review, Nintendo Life praised the sheer wealth of content available in Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS. Not only are there 100 courses designed by Nintendo but each of these features two optional challenges that will test expert Super Mario players to their limit. Of course, Nintendo Life also praised the creation tools available in Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, calling the touchscreen course creation element of the game "a terrific creative toolset". Overall, they called Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS "a big success" and awarded the game a whopping 9/10!

For his Eurogamer article, Martin Robinson looked at Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS not from the perspective of a course creator but as a player of traditional 2D Super Mario platform games. With 100 Nintendo designed courses, many of which are created using the graphical styles of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS is packed with platform action and Robinson appears to have relished the content available, particularly praising the quirky challenges and imagination that have gone into the featured courses. If, like Eurogamer's writer, you're looking for more NES and Super NES style Mario platform action then this is the game for you.
