This unsettling visage bears a striking resemblance to a recurring clue in a string of unsolved murders from 18 years ago – as well as the urban legend Emio, aka the Smiling Man, a serial killer said to grant his victims “a smile that will last forever”.
Does the Smiling Man really exist…or is a new culprit continuing on his legacy?
As a member of the Utsugi Detective Agency, you’ve been tasked with investigating the events that led to Eisuke Sasaki’s death. Along the way, scrutinise the clues and testimonies you gather for potential connections to the gruesome events of the past.
Meet some of the characters involved in this unsettling murder mystery.
A cheerful and patient assistant detective from the Utsugi Detective Agency who possesses a keen intuition. He is assigned to investigate the circumstances of Eisuke Sasaki’s death at the request of the police.
“But…the legend almost has to be connected to the current case, doesn’t it?”
A hard-working assistant detective working alongside the protagonist. Despite her kind-hearted nature, Ayumi is often praised for her interrogation skills.
“OK, I’d like to ask you a few questions.”
The director of the Utsugi Detective Agency. Shunsuke has collaborated with the police on numerous cases, including the series of murders that happened 18 years ago…
“I’d say we have a lot of work to do. Let’s split up and get to it.”
An urban legend with an eerie similarity to the serial killings from 18 years ago. It’s said that Emio would appear before crying girls and offer them “a smile that will last forever”. His murder victims would later be found with a smiley-faced paper bag over their heads.
A police detective working on the Eisuke Sasaki case. She’s considered something of a workaholic by her peers and is notoriously strict on herself and her fellow detectives.
“This is an active crime scene, officer. Your job is to keep the looky-loos OUT!”
A young police detective working alongside Junko Kuze on her investigation. He’s often scolded by Junko for his carefree attitude and approach to detective work.
“You can call me “Dice” if you want. Most people want.”
A police inspector overseeing Junko and Daisuke’s investigation efforts. He and Shunsuke Utsugi previously worked together on the unsolved murders from 18 years ago, and requests the help of the Utsugi Detective Agency.
“Hah! I see Mr. Utsugi has trained you well!”

“Junko taught me about that, believe it or not.”
A retirement home in Yukariko Village. It’s a fairly large facility with an impressive reception counter. It looks like a nice place to unwind after retirement…but it’s a bit early to be thinking about that. Visitations here aren’t allowed without an appointment, so make sure you book ahead.
Person A:
“I suppose so. Turns out that he knew the first victim from the Serial Girl Murder case. They had apparently been meeting up frequently. Anyhow, the same day the body of the first victim was found... We found a disturbing amount of blood in the man's apartment.”
Person B:
“Oh!”
Person A:
“We thought that perhaps the man was injured in some kind of altercation relating to the murder. It's also possible that he himself is the killer!”
Person B:
“But he's still missing...along with the truth.”
The following is a report on the serial murders of young girls 18 years ago.
1. Victims:
All victims were teenage girls, though their ages varied.
2. Cause of death:
Asphyxiation due to pressure on the neck.
3. Additional notes:
Victims were strangled to death with bare hands. Similar to Eisuke Sasaki, all the victims were discovered with smiley-faced paper bag covering their heads.
The culprit has yet to be caught.
A downtown area located in front of Koufuku Station, often frequented by bachelors. Enjoy some grilled chicken skewers and a drink at Yakitori Baby, strike up a conversation with Mama Shoko at Shoko Bar, then finish your night on the town with a curry from Lucky Dice Curry. What a way to spend a Friday night!

“In any case, what I'm most concerned about at this point is that paper bag…”
Person B:
“Right. What do you think it means?”
Person A:
“The thing is...I've seen it before. It must have been...18 years ago now...we had a rash of cases like this one.”
Person B:
“Victims found with paper bags on their heads?”
Person A:
“Exactly that. It's not something I thought I'd ever see again. It was 18 years ago, Koufuku City. We had multiple victims...all young girls.”
Person B:
“All girls? Hmm...”
There are quite a few interesting shops near the Utsugi Detective Agency’s office. There’s a place where you can buy bento lunches, a liquor store and even an oden restaurant. A convenience store, a pharmacy and a bookstore are all within walking distance too.
Student A:
“What were you talking about while I was gone?”
Student B:
“Oh, just that rumor about Eisuke's friend...”
Student A:
“That rumor... Ah! Ahhh!”
Student B:
“Shh! Not so loud...”
Student A:
“Yeah, that rumor seems super important. You never disappoint! Nice work!”
Person C:
“I have to ask. Can you share the "super important" rumor with me?”
Student A:
“So, here's the scoop. Eisuke was friends with a boy named Kenji. But they both kind of had a crush on Megumi! At least, that was the rumor.”
Person C:
“Oh?"
Student B:
“I think you mean Kohei, not Kenji...”
Student A:
“Kohei? Wait, do I have it wrong?”
A public junior high school located in Koufuku City. It’s a three-story building with a lot of classrooms. The rooftop is also open to students, and groups of friends gather there to spend their lunchbreaks together.
Taxi driver:
“So what were you doing there, anyway? Are you some kind of police detective or something?”
Passenger:
“Not exactly. I'm, uh... How can I put it?”
Taxi driver:
“C'mon, son. You look like you're in high school! Aren't you? I drive past all the time for work, but I've never picked anyone up there. So, I gotta ask... What were you up to?"
Passenger:
“I just...had some business to attend to.”
Taxi driver:
“Hmm, I see. Sorry, I don't mean to pry.”
Person A:
“Kami! You're late!”
Person B:
“Sorry I'm late, partner. The traffic was bad and I forgot my briefcase, so I had to go back, and...”
Person A:
“Have you been drinking? Ugh! You might be able to pull this with another partner, but not me!”
Person B:
“Aww, c'mon. Gimme a break...”
Person A:
“What's that? Ugh, here we go again...”
The headquarters of the Koufuku City Police Department. The building houses several conference rooms and interrogation rooms. If you need any assistance, please contact the receptionist, who will be more than happy to help you however she can.
Ayumi:
“So, like I said... The Smiling Man appears in front of a crying girl with a paper bag on his head. And he says... “Aww...you look sad. But you don't have to cry anymore. After all, I can give you a smile that will last forever!” ...And they always find the victim afterward with a paper bag on her head. Just like the Smiling Man wore.”

The scene of the crime where Eisuke Sasaki’s body was found. It’s a drainage pump station located in the mountains of Koufuku City. It’s not far from Minami Daisan Junior High School, which Eisuke attended. There’s also a bus stop near the pump station, though buses don’t seem to come by that often… Due to inadequate street lighting, this area goes pitch black at night, so please take care when visiting the scene of the crime after hours.
The following is a report on the body of a junior high school boy found at a drainage pump station in the mountains of Koufuku City.

Notified by anonymous call.
2. Cause of death:
Asphyxiation due to pressure on the neck.

The estimated time of death was around 9:00 pm. There are few streetlights nearby, so it would have been pitch black at the time of the incident. No witnesses have come forward so far. The victim was discovered with a smiley-faced paper bag over his head. Police believe it’s a homicide case due to evidence indicating that the victim was strangled with a cord-like object.
The Utsugi Detective Agency office is located on the second floor of a multi-tenant building. The agency’s detectives convene here often to discuss information they’ve gathered about the case. The way their team works together to track down leads and make deductions is textbook stuff, though they’re so busy that it’s almost impossible to reach them via the office landline.
