Writing to SD Cards
Wii allows you to save game progress and other data directly to the console's internal memory. An SD Card is not required. However, it is possible to save Wii Channels, Virtual Console games and WiiWare titles on an SD or SDHC Card (maximum 32 GB). If you are almost running out of space on your console's internal memory, using an SD Card is a good way to create new space.
To write to an SD Card, the Wii console requires a downloaded update. To download updates you will need to connect your Wii to the internet. For more information about System Updates for your Wii, please click here.
Please note, without the update, you can still transfer data off an SD Card for use in the Photo Channel. This allows you to view your images, movies, and listen to mp3 files.
Also note that it is not possible to move game data to an SD Card if the data include a connection to Mii characters in the Mii channel or online game rankings.

You can access the new SD Card Menu at the bottom left of the Wii Menu, through the corresponding icon. You can start WiiWare and Virtual Console games directly from the SD Card Menu, but you will need a certain amount of free blocks on the System Memory of your Wii console to able to run the software.
