Story

As Princess Zelda and the Hyrulean General Impa watch over their sparring soldiers-in-training, including a talented young trainee named Link, a dark army marches upon Hyrule. Quick to react, Zelda faces the assault head-on with the full might of her army, but the swarm of otherworldly invaders soon begins to overwhelm the Hyrulean army.

Unable to sit back as war erupts outside, Link leaves the confines of Hyrule Castle to join the battle. During an encounter with a powerful foe, the Triforce of Courage awakens within Link, saving both his life and Impa’s, who recognises him as the chosen hero of Hyrule. After a long battle, Link and the Hyrulean Forces push the threat back, only to learn that some of their enemies were able to creep into Hyrule Castle, and Princess Zelda has gone missing.

Impa and Link prepare for battle and set out to find Zelda, meeting new allies such as the mysterious Sheik and a young sorceress known as Lana. Their journey takes them across time through three different Hyrules of the past, each equally troubled, where they team up with skilled fighters from each world. They’ll need as much help as they can get – it’s going to take all the strength of Hyrule’s greatest warriors, past and present, to reveal the cause of the chaos and bring peace back to Hyrule…

Gameplay

Hyrule Warriors blends the lore of The Legend of Zelda with the over-the-top action of Dynasty Warriors – you’ve never seen Hyrule like this before! Take down swarms of familiar foes on the battlefield with an array of incredible moves, and chain together earth-shaking combos that can swipe out swathes of enemies in one fell swoop.

CI16_WiiU_HyruleWarriors_LinkFightingEnemies.png

As you defeat enemies, you’ll build up a special meter, allowing you to unleash devastating special moves. If you gather enough magic, you can activate the Focus Spirit ability, temporarily boosting your capabilities and giving your special moves even more bite!

But it’s not all about simply taking down the most bad guys; it’s more important to retain control over the battle as a whole. Capture castle keeps by conquering the Keep Boss to increase your hold on the field, defeat key enemies to force the opposing army to retreat, and assist your allies to keep their morale high and ensure that they don’t back down. After all, you won’t be able to win this war by yourself!

Keep command

While most of the opposing army are only threatening in sheer number, look out for certain enemies that you should try to take down immediately. Outpost Captains will continually send more foes forth until they are beaten, while Raid Captains will march forward and try to wrest control of any keeps that you hold.

Enemy commanders also stand between you and victory. You’ll need to be fast on your feet to dodge their blows and hit them hard when a window of opportunity opens. Some commanders will even summon huge monsters to do their bidding – the only way to win is to expose their weak points and hit them where it hurts!

Weapon of choice

To the victors go the spoils – and in Hyrule Warriors, that means weapons! Additional weapons can be found during battle, each with their own properties. You might find a stronger sword that hits harder, or maybe even one that restores your health when you defeat enemies. At the Smithy, you can even fuse weapons together to create your ideal arm.

Each character can get to grips with entirely different weapons that completely change their fighting style. Link is comfortable with a sword in his hand, but he can also incinerate his enemies with the Magic Rod or send the world spinning with Gauntlets.

On your travels you’ll also acquire familiar items from The Legend of Zelda series, which can be used to carve out new routes or smash down your enemies’ defences. Blow your way through boulders with bombs, slice down pesky plant-life and stun enemy soldiers with the boomerang, or give Gohma an eyeful with a well-aimed arrow!

Skillful shopping

Your power increases as you level up through combat, but you can also bolster your abilities by visiting the Bazaar. Take to the Training Dojo to level up characters that are lagging behind, mix up helpful potions in the Apothecary, or fuse weapons at the Smithy. Track down Gold Skulltulas during battle to unlock upgrades for your Bazaar, allowing you to improve your characters further!

Using materials and Rupees found on the battlefield, you can also craft Badges that expand your skillset nicely. Badges can be created for each character, and once applied their effects are permanent. Attack Badges can teach new combos, Defense Badges give you a hand when you’re taking the hits, and Assist Badges offer you an extra advantage by letting you use health potions or expanded special meters.

Use your amiibo!

In Hyrule Warriors, tapping the Link amiibo on the Wii U GamePad’s touch point will unlock a brand new weapon to play with: the Spinner from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess! Tapping the Zelda amiibo once a day will unlock a strong weapon for her to use. You can also tap any amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. Collection once a day to receive random materials, weapons and Rupees.

Tapping the amiibo of a character from Hyrule Warriors once a day will unlock a strong weapon for that character to use!

Modes

There’s more than one war to win in Hyrule Warriors! Venture into different modes and battle on multiple fronts, each with their own paths to victory. Each character’s level, Badges and created weapons carry over to all modes, so if you’re having a tough time in one mode, switch to another to train up before returning to the mode that was giving you trouble.

CI16_WiiU_HyruleWarriors_LinkVsGhirahim.png

Enjoy an epic tale and fight your way through three Hyrules of the past in Legend Mode. Play as some of Hyrule’s greatest warriors from the past and present, track down Princess Zelda and lead your forces to victory against thousands of enemies. Thwart The Dark Sorceress Cia’s plans for the sake of all Hyrule!

Find your own favourite fighter in Free Mode, where you take on the missions from Legend Mode using any characters you’ve unlocked. Replay stages with different characters, weapons and items and discover new strategies – or perhaps they’ll make for a tougher challenge.

Explore the map from the original The Legend of Zelda in a new way in Adventure Mode. Select map squares to face unique challenges: you might have to defeat several boss characters, or beat a certain number of enemies against the clock! Ultimately, you’ll have to summon all your skill to defeat the Dark Ruler…

CI16_WiiU_HyruleWarriors_AdventureModeMap_enGB.png

Earn higher battle ranks and you’ll be able to open more paths, allowing you to explore more freely. As you progress, you might even unlock new warriors or win Item Cards, which can be used to search map squares to find powerful weapons, additional routes and more!

Tag team

You can join forces with a friend in co-operative multiplayer, available in all modes. Two players can work together to save Hyrule, whether they fight back-to-back or split up across the map to cover more ground. Thanks to the Wii U GamePad, each player has their own screen; while one person plays using the GamePad screen, another can pick up a Wii U Pro Controller or Wii Remote and Nunchuk to play on the television.
